Wandering down the streets of Pomona, Haylie was distinctly aware that her parents would massively disapprove of her doing this – walking through city streets, at night, alone. She was headed back to the tour venue having just gone into town to buy some new socks – turns out she hadn’t packed half of the ones she had at home and had quickly run short. Then she’d gotten distracted by a camera shop on the way back... and then a music store... then it shut on her and when she walked outside it was dark again.
What she was wearing was fairly typical for Haylie, although it had become more pronounced since she had joined the tour. Before, she had had to limit the style she preferred and tone it down a little, so that her mum would actually let her out of the house in what she was wearing. She still hadn’t gotten a lot of approval, but it had been acceptable. Now, on the other hand, she didn’t have to worry about them. It took a bit of getting used to, really. She was wearing black skinny jeans with a zip by the ankle that was currently undone, coupled with a pair of blue suede trainers. The top she was wearing, however – a brown layered hoodie with a skull on the side – was not doing a lot to keep her warm. She wished she had put another top on underneath, because right now she was shivering due to the night-time chill.
As her stomach grumbled, she also realised she was hungry... and thirsty, for that matter. Glancing about, she ducked her head again quickly and continued walking, glancing at the shops on either side of her as she passed. Her parents had at least managed to put some sense of caution in her. It was weird being out so late on her own, and not really a good kind of weird. She couldn’t spend a lot on whatever it was she was getting – having intended only on buying socks, she hadn’t brought a lot of money with her. Somewhere cheap then...
The big red and yellow McDonalds sign caught her eye as soon as it came into view, and she let out a sigh. What was the chance that they actually did anything vegetarian? She’d been vegetarian for three years now – another thing her parents had objected to – but with no other cheap food in sight she found herself resigning to the restaurant in front of her. If they had anything that didn’t come from a dead animal.
Peering through the window, she looked up at the boards above the counter and immediately dismissed several. Chicken, out. Fish, out. Deli, out. Salad... maybe. The first two had meat in. Then there was ‘Garden side salad’, ‘Carrot sticks’ and ‘Fruit bag’. What was she, a rabbit, destined to live on leaves?? There must be something better than that. Turning to the side orders, she immediately dismissed the mozzarella dippers, not liking cheese, and wondered if she could have anything other than fries that would be warm and vegetarian.

DO YOU KNOW, THAT EVERYDAYS THE FIRST, of the rest of your life. _____________________________________ ‘C’mon, you have to eat something.’ Riley almost cringed at the thought as he walked randomly down the sidewalk. Eating anything right now seemed about as appealing as eating dirt. The boy didn’t have a eating disorder or anything, and he wasn’t concerned about his weight, but his medicine mess with his stomach and he knew anything he put down now, would be coming back up in record time. Being sick was not exactly Riley’s idea of a fun night. “I’m not hungry...” He spoke into the phone. On the other side of the lime green flip phone was one of his old friends who had gotten out of the hospital just a few weeks before he did. His friend, Cari, had lost her leg to bone cancer, but Riley was glade to hear she got a prosthetic and was coping just fine. ‘Just get something to eat, please?’ The wording sounded like a demand, but the girl exasperated tone hinted that she was in fact asking if he’d comply. “Fine...” He sighed. ‘Really?!’ Cari had heard Riley disagree on that subject so many times, but tonight the thought of trying to be normal sounded nice. Trying to fix in, everyone ate, everyone got hungry, so why not try to get something down... even if it ment sitting by himself watching everyone enjoy there greasy fast food and chatter amongst themselves. ‘Well i gotta go, talk to you later Ry.’ “Okay, bye.” He closed the phone look at the little screen with a clock on it. He had lost track of time, no wonder it had gotten dark so fast.
The night air was a bit chilly, and the cool breeze sent a little shill up his spine. He was wearing black skinny jeans, like always, along with a blue hoodie. On his feet were black converse and his hair was just straightened but slightly messy from the little bit of wind. He hadn't put much thought as to what he had put on that morning. It's not like it really mattered. Skinnys and a hoodie with converse seemed alright to him.
He sighed when he reached the nearest fast food place, McDonalds. He wasn’t going to spend a lot of money on food he most likely wasn’t even going to enjoy. He pulled open the door and instantly the smell of the food made him want to turn around and continue on his walk to... where the hell had he been walking to? He shrugged it off, he just needed some time alone, to think. He sighed his pale blue eyes looking up at the menu above the counter. He sighed pulling his eyes away from the pictures of burgers and sandwiches and scanned over all the people in the building. He noticed a girl, brown hair, brown hoodie, black jeans... she seemed to be having the same problem as him...only he doubted it was exact situation. He figured the girl was just picky, or indecisive... not dying.
Then it dawned on him, he’d seen her somewhere, and seeing as he didn’t live in Califorinia he guess she must have been from the tour. “Hey... are you part of the tour?” He asked completely given up on trying to find something to eat. He could just lie to Cari and say that he had, it wasn’t like it was his first time claiming to have eaten. He hoped she was on the tour, a) because it’ll give him someone to talk to for a little while, and b) he wouldn’t look like a complete idiot asking that question.

((Sorry for the wait!))
Still considering what to have, if anything, Haylie’s attention wandered slightly to glance up and down the street. Down, there was nothing interesting – just the way back to the tour stages. Someone passed across halfway down the hill where another street made a crossroads, but other than that there was little movement.
Glancing up though, she saw another person coming down the hill in her direction, and all the horror stories about being out at night on her own she had been told when she was little or seen on the news came back to her. Inside the nasty dead-animal-restaurant should at least be warmer than out here, she reasoned, trying not to remember the fact that the little 4-year-old girl called Haylie had nightmares for months after overhearing a story on the evening news report about another girl who had been abducted and killed when she went out alone at night one time. The many warnings she had from her parents over the years also contributed to her slight paranoia. The logical Haylie knew the likeliness of being harmed because she was out late was practically zero, but sometimes irrational fear is hard to reason with.
Hurriedly opening the door she went inside McDonalds, a little distracted by childhood fears to be too overwhelmed by the smell of cooking chicken and burgers that usually made her feel disgusted. Instead she just scrunched up her nose a little and looked back up at the board for vegetarian options. There must be a veggie burger here somewhere!
She jumped slightly when the door opened behind her, and glancing back gained a slight red tinge to her face when she realised that the person walking down the hill towards her was a teenage boy, maybe actually younger than her, had just been coming to get some food like she was. Or at least, like she was trying to do, and would have already if this shop contained any decent food not associated with bloody carcasses! Turning back to the board to hide the redness on her face and pretend her momentary paranoia had never happened, she jumped again when he spoke.
Turning back to him, she looked closer and realised that she did actually recognise him – and judging by his question, he was obviously on the tour as well. ”Um, yeah, I am. And... I guess you are too...?” she checked, although it was a pretty silly question really. It wasn’t like anyone in this town was going to notice a photographer if they’d gone to a gig. ”I’m Haylie... photographer for Empty Threat. I think I do recognise you... but... I’m not sure who you are. Sorry. Not good with names.”
